Ramadan 1445 AH — Day 25: Humility before Allah

The true servants of the Most Compassionate are those who walk on the earth humbly, and when the foolish address them improperly, they only respond with peace. — Qur’an 25[Al-Furqan]:63

Humility before Allah is one of the most important acts of worship in the life of a Muslim. It is one of the most neglected and toughest acts of worship to master. It requires immense training till one’s heart is positioned in its domain. It is to walk the earth while truly feeling in need of Allah, that you’re helpless without His assistance and paralyzed without His aid.

In a society that frequently celebrates pride and arrogance, humility might appear overlooked. Nonetheless, in Islam, it remains a cherished trait that necessitates nurturing within ourselves. Emulating the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions enables us to embrace the genuine essence of humility and foster a stronger connection with Allah.

Humility is a virtue that holds immense significance in the life of a believer. It is a quality that is deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam and is exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions. Humility is not just a desirable trait. It is a necessary one for those seeking the pleasure of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the epitome of humility. Despite being the final messenger of Allah and the leader of the Muslim community, he never considered himself above others. He lived a simple ascetic life, humbling himself before Allah and bringing benefits to the people.

Let’s ponder over the words of the Prophet ﷺ in praise of Allah while bowing in worship:

O Allah, I prostrate to You, I have faith in You, and I surrender myself to You. My hearing, my sight, my intellect, my bones, and my nerves — all have submitted to You.” — Sunan An-Nasai’

Consider the words of Imam Ibnul Qayyim who said:

“I have tried drawing closer to Allah by entering every possible door of worship, but every time I approached a door, I found it congested with people, and so I was unable to enter. Until I approached the door of humility and bankruptcy to Allah, where I found that it was the quickest and widest of all doors to Allah, but to my surprise, I realized that there wasn’t any congestion at it nor were there any barriers. I placed my foot inside and at once, I was taken by the hand and allowed to walk inside.”

Humility begins with our relationship with Allah. When we humble ourselves before our Creator, acknowledging our weaknesses and shortcomings, we open the doors to His mercy and forgiveness. We recognize that all our blessings and achievements are from Allah alone, and we express gratitude for His favor upon us. Then we extend it to our interactions with others — how we treat people.

In conclusion, let’s embody humility in all aspects of our lives. We should worship Allah with humility, submitting ourselves completely to His will. We should seek knowledge with humility, recognizing that there is always more to learn. We should treat others with humility, seeing them as our equals in the sight of Allah.

May Allah grant us the strength to embrace humility in our lives, and make us among those who walk upon the earth with ease. May He protect us from the dangers of pride and arrogance and guide us to the path of righteousness. Ameen.
