I last interrupted my father’s party with the request for my inheritance, which caused my brother to explode and insult my friends. SO! To the story.

I knew he would never understand, but I didn’t expect him to go so far as to insult my friends.

“Don’t insult my friends. They have always been there for me.”

“Always been there for you. What about us? Have we not been there for you? How dare you break our father’s heart,” my brother responded.

I knew it. My friends were right. No one in this family cares about what I want. I do not want to spend my life tending to sheep like my father or working endlessly like my brother.

I just want to enjoy my time here. My friends are the only ones who understand me.

The moment my father raised his hand, we both knew to be quiet. I could see my brother fuming, and though I was not ready to back down, neither of us was stupid enough to speak at that moment.

I looked at my father’s face. I wish I never did.

There was no anger, only disappointment. Shame overtook me, and for a moment, I wanted to take it all back.

No! I must leave this suffocating place. I can’t stay here anymore.

“Is that why you joined me in the search today?” My father said.

How could I respond? I kept my head down, afraid to see more in his eyes.

“Is this what you really want?”

“Yes, dad”

I saw a sadness in my father’s eyes that I had never seen before, but he smiled and turned to my brother.

“Theo, you will call the accountant and the lawyer for a meeting tomorrow morning, and we will get it sorted as quickly as possible.”

He turned to me and said, “Where will you go?”

I had not thought of that.

What now?!
