Re-inventing ourselves is the most important skill nowadays. I’m reinventing myself by improving in 15 areas at a time. This post is part of my Re Human project.

Art from Velocity of Being book

Hi,

What are you thinking about, right now? What have you been thinking about this past week? Month? Year? Life?

I’ve found that being aware of what I’m thinking about, in each moment, is more than powerful. Learning from reflections of past moments and periods of time is powerful too, but if you master each moment, by definition you’ve mastered all moments.

The power in noticing that you’re scrolling through a social media app and noticing what you’re thinking about, gives rise to more things than just that power.

It creates the possibility to determine whether you want to stop scrolling or not.

And the decision is also determined by noticing what you’re thinking about when making that decision, and thinking whether that’s what you want to be giving in to. Is it laziness, fear, uncertainty, doubt? Could be. They’re hard to overcome, but the more you’re able to overcome them, the more confident your mind will be that it can overcome them.

Just a thought I had as I started writing this.

Hope this coming week is awesome for you.

Best,

Valentin

This Week’s Breakthrough Knowledge

  • Contradictions often point to insights / breakthrough knowledge.
  • In this age of networks and information, understanding how to navigate and leverage them is a super power.
  • Stepping stone algorithm: To accomplish something big, you do not set ambitious goals and then work backwards. Rather, you follow the stepping stones immediately in front of you that give you the most novel paths forward, even if you aren’t sure exactly how that stepping stone will pay off in the future. Then, from that new stepping stone, you look for the the most novel path forward again. And so on, jumping from one novel stepping stone to another. Further expansion in this awesome article.
  • Instead of having a Goal filter, having a Curiosity filter could be more powerful: Am I so fascinated by this that I’d be willing to spend serious effort learning more? As a filter to determine whether you want to do whatever you’re considering.
  • We are all great. Smart is good, but it’s the non-cognitive skills that make you great. Courage, self-discipline, will-power. Our minds have infinite courage and will power — hard to tap but they’re there. Incredible video of the toughest man on Earth talking about this.
  • “Homework for life” exercise: end of day, write a short story of a moment that happened today. Refines awareness, storytelling mindset, fulfillment, meaning. Video that explains and introduced this exercise. Worth watching. I’m going to start doing this exercise, will write how it goes at some point in this blog.

What breakthrough knowledge resonated with you the most? What will you apply? I would love to hear your response to this first question, and I wish that your response to the second one happens.
