Carrying Faith with Lightness

Dear Descendant,

In the heart of Ramadan, today we also encounter April Fools’ Day — a day often marked by jests and light-hearted pranks. It brings to mind an anecdote shared in some Seerah books (biographies of the Prophet) that highlights the humour of Prophet Mohammad.

One of the companions of the Prophet, Nu’ayman, was known for his sense of humour. On one occasion, Nu’ayman saw an Arab merchant selling some goods. Knowing that another companion, Suhaib, loved to eat, Nu’ayman told the merchant that Suhaib would pay for the goods, and then he took them to Suhaib as a gift. When the merchant asked Suhaib for payment, Suhaib was confused, as he had not ordered these goods. Realising what had happened, they all went to Prophet Mohammad to resolve the misunderstanding. Upon hearing the story, instead of reprimanding Nu’ayman, the Prophet laughed and settled the merchant’s dues himself.

The Prophet appreciated the lighter moments shared among his companions, recognising that laughter and joy are essential elements of life. His response to Nu’ayman’s prank highlights a balance between humour and the responsibility to ensure no harm or injustice was done.

Ramadan Kareem. Along with the depths of spiritual reflection may we also touch the lighter side of faith.
