The Heart of Ramadan

Dear Descendant,

In the heart of Ramadan, today, lies Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree. This sacred night commemorates a pivotal moment in human spiritual history, when the Quran began to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

The significance of Laylat al-Qadr is manifold. Described in the Quran (97:3) as “better than a thousand months”, this night accentuates the value of time, divine decree, and the opportunity for profound spiritual awakening and forgiveness. In the Islamic tradition, it is a night when the veils between the divine and the human are believed to be thinned, and prayers are answered, mercy is bestowed, and sins are forgiven. There are many other spiritual traditions around the world where similar energetic possibilities are recognised when certain astrological confluences occur.

The revelation of the Quran on Laylat al-Qadr introduced a comprehensive guide for organising a community with purpose, compassion, and justice, based on a certain context. It called upon believers to reflect on the creation, to uphold justice, to cherish knowledge, and to foster peace — principles that remain as relevant across space and time.

Ramadan Kareem. May we strive to embody the timeless teachings of our spiritual traditions for the benefit of all.
