Part 3: Ovulation and the luteal phases of the menstrual cycle with recommended workouts
The luteal phase of the female menstrual cycle is sometimes considered the autumn season.
In this article, I wrote about the first phase of the menstrual cycle with details of recommendations for workouts and how menstruation affected my running. Then, Part 2 covered the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.
Today, I will focus on phases 3 and 4 of the cycle: ovulation and the luteal phase.
Before we discuss workout recommendations during ovulation and the luteal phase, we have to define each phase to understand what is happening inside the female body.
Ovulation is the main event of the female menstrual cycle with the production and release of a fully matured egg from the ovary. The release of the the egg is caused by a surge of luteinizing hormone, peaking in the body. Ovulation lasts only about 12–24 hours before the egg is reabsorbed into the body if it hasn’t been fertilized.
