Starting during the summer of 2011 working with David Lopez of Teach For America (TFA) we embarked on creating USAdelante, a national peer-to-peer network of Latin@ leaders. The concept was to connect peers to each other and provide leadership development exercises to work through together. The purpose is so student leaders review questions relating to leadership development and build a national network. Establishing a peer-to-peer model creates a scalable way to grow the mentorship program. We piloted with a group of 20 students across 8 different colleges across the US. In order to prototype the application, prior to any technical development we emailed them weekly with exercises and facilitated the scheduling of the calls between students. We did this over a period of 16 weeks, collected feedback on a weekly basis, and prepared for starting our technical development over the summer.
