“Scrum Master (SM) service to the organization:

Leading and coaching the organization in its Scrum adoption;

Working with other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of the application of Scrum in the organization. — Scrum Guide”

Continuing from my previous article, this article explores further how Scrum Master can help build a learning and sharing culture. This list is not exhaustive.

I have considered a product structured organization and different levels starting from an individual to leadership. In this article I am talking about next levels after Team level. These levels can be tweaked based on organizational structures.

Different Levels to Share Knowledge (*L&D — Learning and Development)

1) Across Teams Level

I am assuming there would be multiple teams within each product development. This is an opportunity to share knowledge, experiments, experiences across and within a product development teams.

Buddy

A buddy to talk about work, technology, meetings, rant about anything and everything etc. Many organizations do not build an environment where people get opportunities to share and learn about what is going on across the organization.

This helps in building intellectual strength and better retention. Scrum Masters need to support and coach individuals to build a learning environment.

2) Across Products and Communities

Based on how organization is structured there is opportunity to share knowledge between teams spread across products and communities. There are different activities that can be used at this level like:

a) Guilds

This one is inspired from Spotify. Creating a community of interest people sharing knowledge and learning in a bigger wide-reaching platform. Building up guilds would see engagement from groups who are not part of product delivery team.

b) Hackathons

Like hack days but on a bigger scale. Really brings in collaborations across not only technical teams but also from non-technical teams.

c) Agile Clinic

This is a platform where individuals or teams can bring their concerns and get coached on. SMs can help build this platform and coach across organization.

d) Tech Talk

Inspired from TedX events, this platform provides individuals to share their learnings. SMs can support facilitating and helping individuals to speak up in this forum.

3) Leadership

Leaders influence learning across the organization. Their support at all levels motivates and builds in an environment where learning and knowledge sharing is appreciated. Scrum Masters or Agile coaches working with leaders can support creating this learning culture.

Now learning does not stop if you are in the leadership level. At this level, engaging in different activities across organization shows their support on building this culture.

Knowledge is only useful if you do something with it — Jeffrey Pfeffer

Scrum Masters service to the organization is to build and support an environment where knowledge becomes useful. There are different knowledge management activities that can help build this culture.

Do share your experience on activities which help in learning and sharing knowledge.
