Although many people may handle the hunt for casual sex by making it crystal clear what they want as soon as possible, according to a study in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, men who want to hook up are actually more successful when they don’t act like they want a casual encounter.

While it may sound counterintuitive, this strategy is a delicate dance designed to help men boost their chances when trying to hook up with women. This is because, according to a study of the behavior of male and female college students, even though women may be interested in casual sex, if a man seems like he will indiscriminately sleep with anyone, their interest declines.

Men who are overly eager do not come across as attractive,” explained researcher Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair.

On the other hand, women do the casual sex dance a little bit differently when they want a roll in the hay. Though men may pretend to be less interested in sex, women may actually pretend to be more interested in casual sex than they actually are.

“We think this may be to keep the man’s attention a little longer,” said Kennair.
