This is a list of ideas for short, simple, local excursions—microadventures—that can be embarked upon from San Francisco. They require no skill, no exotic equipment (if you don’t have a sleeping bag or tent, borrow one from a friend), little or no money, and only a normal, healthy level of fitness. All but a few can be accomplished in a day or two, and some can even be squeezed into a weeknight. You can do them alone or with friends, and they make for great dates. Adventure isn’t where you go, or how high you climb, or how difficult you make it on yourself — it’s a state of mind, and it can be achieved anywhere, anytime, and by just about anyone.
