I May Destroy You, the critically acclaimed HBO/BBC Limited series from creator, star, producer, writer Michaela Coel has been listed among the 2021 recipients for the prestigious Peabody Awards.

The Peabody, named for the American businessman and philanthropist George Peabody, honours the most powerful, enlightening, and invigorating stories in television, radio, and online media. Reflecting excellence in quality storytelling, rather than popularity or commercial success, Peabody Awards are distributed annually to 30 out of 60 finalists culled from more than 1,000 entries.

This year’s awards recognize works for the 2020 calendar year. Thandiwe Newton presented the award for I May Destroy You to Michaela Coel, the star-creator of the series.

This recognition is coming just weeks after the series shone at the Banff Rockie Awards, winning in both the limited series and grand jury prize categories.

Also winning at this year’s Peabodys is the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company. Selma Blair presented the award to Crip Camp. Last week, the Peabodys gave Ava DuVernay’s Array its Institutional Award.

More winners will be unveiled over the week, with the presentations taking place from June 21–24 on social media (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook) and the Peabody Awards’ website from 9–10:30 a.m. PT.

You can check out the videos of the awards presentations and acceptance speeches here.

The Peabody board of jurors selected the winners from a list of 60 nominees, revealed last month, chosen from more than 1,300 entries. Nominees and winners must be unanimously chosen by the board of jurors.
