One of my favorite things to do is to download & try new apps. This past month, I took a look at BeReal & Bopdrop, two apps that seem to be taking over college campuses and TikTok profiles accordingly.

BeReal

BeReal. Your Friends for Real.

I found out about BeReal while visiting my cousin at her college — after some conversation, I saw her take out her phone and quickly take two pictures in rapid succession — one of her surroundings, immediately followed by a selfie. I leaned over and took a peek at her screen and realized I did not recognize this app. Upon asking her, she quickly informed me that “all the college kids” were using this app and that I had to get on it and add her as a friend. Driven by curiosity, or as they would call it: FOMO, I decided to download the app and give it a try.

Once a day at random, BeReal asks users to “be real” by posting a set of pictures from their front and back cameras. This encourages users to post authentically and acts as an alternative to the highly edited & curated images on other social media platforms.

BeReal. Your Friends for Real.

So far, I have really enjoyed these “in the moment” snapshots into my friends’ daily lives. I feel like the content on Be Real is more quirky/funny, realistic, and somewhat vulnerable. It’s a refreshing experience that contrasts the somewhat draining experience that many young people have when comparing themselves to unrealistic perceptions on other platforms.

Bopdrop

Discover & Share New Music Together | bopdrop

I discovered Bopdrop while scrolling on TikTok and repeatedly seeing users talk about this new app. Many were describing it as a panacea to their music problems and showcasing their newly curated playlists.

A social music sharing app, Bopdrop allows users to share and discover new songs and artists with friends and followers. Users can post up to two times a day and can add a description along with their song of choice.

I’ve been using this app in conjunction with Spotify — I discover new music on Bopdrop and then add them to playlists on Spotify. While Spotify has some social features, I think Bopdrop further facilitates discovery & sharing. For instance, Bopdrop has a messaging feature in which you can DM a song to a friend. You also have the option to scroll on 4 different feeds: following, for you, popular, and genre.

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed using this app and have already found some amazing new songs and artists. I would definitely recommend downloading it and giving it a shot!
