SIMPLIFYING TECH: Mastodon

As a result of Elon’s acquisition of Twitter, many users have been looking for alternatives to leave the platform as a part of the #TwitterMigration. One of the popular alternatives is Mastodon:

Mastodon (@joinmastodon) is a decentralized social network that is a part of the Fediverse. The Fediverse (federation + universe) is a collection of community-owned, ad-free, decentralized, and privacy-centric servers that while independently hosted, can communicate with each other.

A federated network like the Fediverse works similarly to email or cellular networks, in which regardless of provider, accounts/numbers can communicate with one another.

Unlike traditional social media, Fediverse social media apps like Mastodon have many different servers/instances that are owned and operated by anyone with unique rules/content moderation policies.

Due to its structure, Mastodon is ad-free and thus avoids user data collection. Since it is not owned by a single entity, Mastodon is not beholden to shareholders and has no clear mandate to generate revenue.

To create a Mastodon account, you must join a server/instance. You will have many to choose from and you can filter through them based on different attributes such as geographical location (ex: North America) or interests (technology, journalism, etc) for instance.

Regardless of which Mastodon server you choose, you will be able to communicate with other users across different servers and you will both be able to see each other’s content.
