Keep your design flat

We are talking about the Sketch app for Mac

Hello beautiful reader, today I'm going to write an article about the Flatten operation in Sketch. The reason why I'm doing this is that I've published a short story on how to draw an equilateral triangle in Sketch and I've received this comment below that.

Let's start this session with drawing a square with rounded corners in Sketch. Once we draw it we cannot flatten it, right? It seems that it is already flat. If we double-click the shape to edit its individual points we would see something like in the picture below.

This result may cause some troubles though (there is a chance that we could lose these rounded corners when exporting it into a .svg file for instance). We should rather export something like this instead:

Let's create an equilateral triangle now: Insert -> Shape -> Polygon and decrease the number of Sides from 5 to 3. What we have is something like this:

The thing is that the object's height isn't quite right. We want to have something like this:

But how do we do that? We need to make it flat! But it is not possible since the Flatten button is not active and the object is already flat, right?

There is a nice little trick that I use. I simply add a shape (a square usually) into the original object, select both layers and apply the Union operation on it. Then the Flatten button is active and you can make your shapes great again. You can apply this technique on the triangle as well.

Always keep your design flat and If you cannot flat it find a way to do so. See you soon with more nice Sketch tips and tricks. Bye bye!
