Share the Sail Croatia — Day Three: Blue Hole Cave
On the morning of the third day, with our starter battery replaced and fully charged, we were up at dawn and heading out. We had a date with Blue Hole Cave (Modra špilja) on the nearby island of Biševo. Made famous in the 1800s by Baron Eugen von Ransonet, Blue Cave was originally only accessible by diving, but in 1884 an opening was created to allow small boats to enter, and it has been a tourist attraction ever since.
We wanted to get there in the morning as it might be less crowded, and we heard the light was better before noon because the underwater opening faces East toward the rising sun. It didn’t disappoint.
We arrived and took a mooring ball in the bay with a few other boats that had already arrived. Soon we were visited by the local operator on a small boat and asked if we wanted the tour and how many. He drove off and a short time later a decent-sized tender arrived and took on our crew and everyone on the boat next to us. We were taken to a landing where we bought tickets, then re-boarded the same small boat and headed for the cave entrance.
