Berwartstein Castle

A rock-castle still standing tall — Castles and Ruins Part 6

Imagine hiking up a hill ever in the rain. You take it slowly since you’re watching your step, but then you have to look up only to find a rose-covered chapel belonging to Berwartstein Castle. This is what our family encountered on a rainy Sunday morning as we made our way up. No rain was going to stop us from our continued exploration of the area.

The rock castle, located in the southwestern part of the Palatinate forest in Germany, served as a defense of the Palatinate during the Middle Ages. We explored other castles in the area, including Altdahn, which as of today remains in ruins. However, Berwartstein Castle appears complete, but only due to the restoration efforts.

As we hiked up the trail towards the castle, we appreciated its tallest tower from different perspectives. The castle’s construction was part of the sandstone rock formations and houses a well, a great hall, and candlelit underground passages.

The grounds hold a quaint restaurant and gift shop with a stone stair entrance into the castle. Once…
