Take Me Back to Tulum

SNAPSHOTS Hammock Challenge

--

A few days ago, my husband and I found ourselves with a free morning — no work, no school, no place to be. As we relished the extra time lounging in bed, we were reminded of the trip we took to Tulum for our 10th Wedding Anniversary.

While that trip was full of adventure — exploring ancient Mayan ruins, hiking, cycling, snorkeling, and climbing to the top of Nohoch Mul at Coba — many hours were spent simply lounging at Piedra Escondida, relaxing with the sounds of crashing waves and the salty ocean breeze.

When I read the Hammock Challenge, this immediately came to mind.

I have a long-enduring love of black & white photography. In the 1990’s, I would actually purchase black & white film and take two cameras on trips or photo shoots to capture scenes in both color and black & white. By the early 2000’s, I was transitioning from film to digital and falling in love with the ability to take one camera, snap unlimited pictures without the prohibitive cost of film and developing, instantly preview the image to make sure I got the shot, and then alter the photograph in countless ways.

Though digital photography has made it tremendously easier to be creative with photographs, I find that often, I don’t get around to doing it.

Our trip to Tulum was nearly three years ago; I had not yet edited any of these photographs. So, thanks for this challenge, SNAPSHOTS! I enjoyed the reason to revisit these images and edit a few.

Above was our first taste of relaxation in Tulum. We finally arrived at Piedra Escondida after about twelve hours of travel. The light and textures lend themselves beautifully to black & white photography.

In the absence of color, I am drawn to the dynamic light bursting from behind the clouds in this picture from the front balcony of our room.

This shot most accurately captures how we spent the majority of our downtime. The side balcony of our room was our favorite place to relax, with its hammock and lounge chairs.

This was the picturesque scene from that side balcony.

Relaxing on the beach, the true view was the underside of a canopy. I can almost hear the straw rustling in the wind.
