As a web-design and marketing firm, we often see clients who have some semblance of a website, but it’s not doing exactly what they need it to do.

Many people are tempted by the “low-price” (I use quotes because you end up paying way more in monthly fees than you would using WordPress and a professional designer) and seeming ease of a drag and drop website. Squarespace, Wix and Weebly all have their competitve arguments and beautiful marketing campaigns, but more often than not, you start there and end up with a designer to help you with your clean ups.

It could be as simple as starting a small site for a passion project that turns into a viable business. But if you’re feeling the growing pains of a website that’s not strong enough to handle your current needs, it’s time to upgrade.

First, before you do anything, back up your existing website! There’s nothing more painful than losing year’s worth of copy and images. Make 100% certain that your current site provider has a accurate back up of your site before you begin any changes.

Just because your site isn’t doing everything you want, doesn’t mean there’s nothing good there. Take a week and review the current site. Evaluate what’s working and what’s missing. Make sure to document the issues either way so you can incorporate your feedback into your next website iteration.

Once you know what you want to change, create an improvement list. If you go to a web designer with a list, it will cut down on discovery time and costs. They’ll either be able to fix what’s wrong in your existing site or it will be a good jumping off point for a new build. Being prepared will help bring your vision to life in a more cost effective manner.

Lastly, hire a web designer. We have written at length about the benefits of hiring a real, live web designer. But long story short, it’s worth the additional effort to have someone help you through a proper web design project. We have a lot of clients who come to us frustrated and exhausted from an inefficient website design. Save yourself the headache and do it right the first time.
