When you are starting out as a writer the money could be tight and it can be hard to justify spending much on a tool that may not be what you want. Also, you may not want to use the Google docs platform to hold your novel or short story ideas for very long. Maybe you want to self-host your. Following is not a comprehensive list but a good start on what is out there as far as open source novel writing and writing apps in general.
