Our distinguished guests for October 28 are:

Russlynn Ali

Russlynn Ali oversees Emerson Collective’s investments and partnerships to accelerate progress in US education. She identifies policy priorities, shapes investments and collaborations with partner organizations, and serves as Emerson’s leading thought leader and ambassador on education reform. Previously, she was appointed assistant secretary for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Education by President Obama. In this role, she led a team of more than 600 attorneys, investigators and staff that is widely credited with revitalizing civil rights enforcement in education. Earlier in her career, she worked as Vice President of the Education Trust in Washington D.C. and with the Children’s’ Defense Fund.

Angela Glover Blackwell

Angela Glover Blackwell is founder and CEO of PolicyLink — a leading voice in the movement to use public policy to improve access and opportunity for all low-income people, particularly in the areas of health, housing, transportation, education, and infrastructure. Previously, Blackwell served as senior vice president at the Rockefeller Foundation, where she oversaw the foundation’s domestic and cultural divisions. She is a frequent commentator The New York Times, Huffington Post, Washington Post, Salon, and CNN. She is the co-author of Uncommon Common Ground: Race and America’s Future, and serves on President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

David Grusky

David B. Grusky is Professor of Sociology at Stanford University, Director of the Center on Poverty & Inequality, the California Welfare Laboratory, and Recession Trends, and coeditor of Pathways Magazine and the Social Inequality Series. His recent books are The Great Recession, The New Gilded Age, The Inequality Puzzle, The Inequality Reader , Social Stratification, Poverty and Inequality, and many more.
