Continuous learning and personal development are core principles to the Engineering Culture of a successful company, and it’s especially important for engineering teams. At Stepstone, we believe that knowledge sharing is an essential part of our company culture. We encourage employees to share their experiences with each other to help everyone grow together.

That is the reason why we are proud to introduce and host our first ever Engineering Days: a three-day event from tech people for tech people! Our engineers can participate as part of their Chapter time to develop professionally, connect with their fellows, and learn about new technologies.

Our goal is simple: Learn from each other, share experiences, and create a strong community of Stepstone engineers.

When we first discussed the idea with some of our engineers, there was an overwhelming enthusiasm — everybody was excited and came up with ideas on how to contribute. After all these talks, one statement stayed in our mind:

“We want to talk TECH! We want a place where we can really talk and exchange about coding and TECH in general, without having to translate it into business language.”

We quickly decided that “Let’s Speak Tech!” would be our theme for the event and sticked to it during the whole organization: The planning was done in our Engineering Culture team: However, all content is provided by our amazing technical staff who have come up with truly fantastic ideas!

During our upcoming event from 15 to 17 March, we are looking forward to 11 keynote speakers. In addition to 10 internal speakers we are happy to also welcome one external guest speaker.

Our internal speakers come from various teams within our TECH organization, which allows for cross-functional knowledge sharing and contributes to breaking down silos.

Topics range from “Polyglot programming with GraalVM”, “GitHub Copilot” and “Technical Debt” to company projects like “AI Ethics @ Stepstone”, “Data Platform technical overview”, “Data Hub” and “The Global Platform”, up to global topics like “Accessibility from the TECH Perspective”.

Further, we are excited to welcome our guest speaker Dragan Stepanović, a principal engineer who helps companies to evolve their Engineering Culture, tame their bottlenecks, and maximize the throughput of the value. During the Engineering Days Dragan will talk about how async code reviews can help increase throughput in an organization.

In addition to the keynote speeches, we will host two hackathons:

“Visualizing Word Embeddings, Uncovering Insights”- a hackathon for natural language processing enthusiasts and “Slimming Down Our Tech Stack — Let’s Kill Gulp”, a hackathon for those who enjoy ripping out marginal legacy system.

These hackathons allow our tech staff to work together in teams and build creative and innovative solutions. The hackathons are a fun and exciting way to encourage collaboration and creativity among our people.

We’ve seen such high engagement levels so far, which shows just how passionate our tech people are when it comes to sharing knowledge and developing their skillsets further. We strongly believe that these events will create a sense of community among our tech staff, which leads to better collaboration, communication, and ultimately, better outcomes for our customers.

By investing in our employees’ learning and development, we are investing in the future success of our company.
