Last week we had the opportunity to host an event for ReDi school Malmö at our beautiful StepStone Malmö office.

Around 30 students attended from ReDi school. After a brief introduction of StepStone and our office, the group was divided into two where half of the group engaged in speed dating with our staff, and the other half was presented with some of the experiments we are working on.

At half-time, the groups switched, and Pizza was served to all

What is ReDI School?
ReDI School is a non-profit tech school for women with migrant- and refugee backgrounds, offering a free program, including IT and tech courses on several levels. The Focus is to create digital empowerment by supporting women in getting access to digital skills and a social & professional network in Sweden. We also work for more diversity and inclusion in the Swedish labor market, especially in the tech sector We believe that newcomers are a great opportunity for society and we are here to give them a helping hand to make use of their potential.

Part 1 — Networking
From our point of view. it was really inspiring talking to all the students and hearing their stories and “struggles” in getting access to the job market. There were people from all over the world with very different backgrounds.

Many of the students are highly educated already but due to various reasons have difficulties making use of their education here in Sweden. It could be everything from different certification systems to language barriers. Through these stories, ranging from the restaurant manager to the front-end developer with 10 years of experience, we gained valuable insights into our domestic job market and how challenging it can be. Even if we could see the struggle, we also saw a lot of hope and energy from the students showing great interest in what we were doing at StepStone and in the field of #jobtech.

Part 2 — A glimpse of our experiments

When not speed dating on the 1st floor the students had the chance to familiarise themselves with some of our experiments and hear the story from some of our employees about how they ended up in the tech industry. They got to see our virtual office through a VR headset and our Software Developers explained the technologies and work behind it. For many, this was the first time they tried out VR.

We are also doing various experiments with AI and natural language processing that we showed and here the students had the chance to see how far AI has come and they asked a lot of great questions.

They also had a chance to listen to Elisabeth’s story and Elena’s story on how they ended up working with #jobtech. Two very different stories but very inspiring. This was really appreciated by the students to hear about, and many mentioned it as the highlight of the evening!
