Microfiction is a story in 300 words or less (not including title).
This is the definition we choose to define Microfiction, there are others.

Every Story

  • Has a beginning, middle and end.
  • Has Conflict.
  • Has Character(s).
  • Has a change in the Main Character (character arc).

300 words or less

Microfiction is squeezed into 300 words or less. It is not just a short story written in fewer words. This is a severe restriction and most description can be removed.

Additional techniques

It can employ many additional techniques to pack more information in fewer words. Every word fights for existence and must advance the story in some way, so writing Microfiction needs a different skill set to writing short stories. It’s mantra is CUT, CUT, CUT. Extreme brevity is the order of the day.
No fluff. Like any skill, it takes time to acquire and master.

Title

One technique overlooked by most storytellers is choosing a good title.

The title can be used to set the scene or set the mood for zero word count.
An effective title starts the story early. For instance the title Twister! might evoke all you know about hurricanes and immediately set the scene before the story begins.

Character Naming

It is possible to use “loaded” names: Names that are pre-loaded with meaning.
Scrooge — suggests a miser.
Donald — bumbling duck or leader of the western world.
Prince Charming — think about it.

You can have a great deal of fun getting the right name for your characters.

Others

There are many other techniques utilised to get more meaning from less words.
