What Will You Die For?

Values

A man puts his life at stake to save his wife and children, and died. He knew the cost, and he was willing to pay the price for the ones he loved.

Strangers have paid with their lives to save others. What motivated them? We may recall stories of passersby who lost their lives to save children’s lives from drowning, fires, and adverse situations that are traumatic to recall.

Waves

When, like the disciples, the storms of life rage on our Galilean lakes, we do all we know to preserve our lives. We don’t have to think far back to recall how precious life is—extreme measures were adhered to in the hope of keeping safe from a life-threatening virus.

When life’s waves threaten or assault us, we resort to different strategies to stay safe — physically, mentally, financially, and emotionally. We may,

  • Row harder
  • Shout louder
  • Throw in the towel
  • Moan to friends
  • Isolate wisely or in self-pity
  • Call out to the Master, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, to save us

Whatever coping mechanism we choose, it’s usually to self-preserve the life we value for different reasons. Are we truly aware of its value? Do we sometimes forget the value?

Reflect

Different waves will come in different seasons of life. We may not know what wave, when, or how, and it may be when we least expect it. Our preset life values will determine how well we take charge of emotional waves when the storms come. What do I value most?

When the storm is over and the waves are calmer, take a deep breath and do a check-in with yourself. Answering this question truthfully, will help strengthen your mind in readiness for life’s inevitable storms.

What am I preserving my life for?

Your life has a unique purpose, with unique dreams you hold like seeds of a tree to flourish. Allow your life to be expressed daily, cherishing each moment, for that’s what we certainly have. The big dreams unfold in the little daily acts of kindness, like stars shining in the night, illuminating paths and lives. Your life has a unique purpose, don’t hold back pour it out.

You are made in God’s image, to make good things too.

We die daily

The car cannot drive forever. There comes a time when it will stop working completely, no matter how well we care for it. Our bodies will not go on forever. There will come a time for each person to exit life’s uncertain paths. What will our time have been spent on? What will our lives have been used for? The fuel tank gets closer to empty daily.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

— Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV)
