Estrela Mountains or “Serra da Estrela” is the highest mountain range on the Portuguese mainland. Here are the top 5 reasons to come here:
1- Sports, like skiing in Winter or hiking in Summer!
2- Buy unique souvenirs: Cheese Serra da Estrela or wool cloth
3- Visit Bread Museum in Seia
4- Drink water from Mondego River or Alva River sources
5- And my favorite, the one I will be showing: discover the lakes and the glaciers at the heart of the Mountain…

On the way up to Estrela Mountains (Portugal)

“Serra da Estrela” is one of my favorite places in Portugal, I never miss the chance to drive up there to submerge myself in the deepest of the silences.

Hidden in the center of Estrela Mountains, in Penhas Douradas and close to the biggest glacier valley of Europe, Rossim Valley a breathtaking lake awaiting you. It feels special to swim in the highest of the lakes of Portugal, 1.437 m above the sea level!

What once was a massive grazing field, is now a beautiful reservoir. Rossim Valley offers a great recreational way to enjoy a day off or a holiday whether you are into fishing, birdwatching or wildlife photography and watersports like me. Also, many hiking trails, also good for horse-riding or cycling. You can plan a full holiday, since the Eco Resort has a camping, SPA, lounge bar and restaurant with music and Wi-Fi.

I love to chill with the magical sunset above the clouds, only me and the glorious views from the highest point of the mountain!
Always a good bet, you should come too! Seizing the simple beauty of the moment will make you bounce from any hardship in life…

Now that I am convinced, how do I get there?

If you have extra time, I strongly suggest you visit Covão dos Conchos, this dam has become extremely popular in the past few months, thanks to a couple of videos recorded by drones of the enormous hole that is draining the lake. Getting the media's attention and making everyone's imagination run free.

A drone view of Covão dos Conchos I found on Youtube:
