Surfing Santana — Sao Tome’s Finest Point Break and The National Championship

Santana is the name of a small town and a pretty amazing right-hand point break where the best surfers of the country are ripping it.

When you come to Sao Tome and want to surf, there is no way around Santana. The little town, actually not so small by Sao Tomean standards, is the surf capital of the country. The only surf school I am aware of is based here. If you hang around on the street where the school is, you will run into the country’s best surfers. How do I know that? I will tell you.

The spot

Santana has the thing Sao Tome surfers look for: A right-hand point break. This one here is particularly beautiful and a very different animal compared to its cousin further north at radiation point (click here to read more about it).

The wave size tends to sit in the middle between radiation point’s outside and inside, but closer to the outside. So if you have a 2-meter wave at radiation point’s outside, which is large by Sao Tomean standards, then Santana will be 10–20% smaller.
