You can’t get all your “Ducks in a Row” — Embrace the Chaos

Many of us are craving this feeling of finally being “on top of things” and not “chasing”, to finally feeling relaxed and totally in control….we are desperate for closure or a period of calm.

If you are a leader, manager, self-employed or a high-level performer, you live and work at a fast pace with many challenges, it is hard work! This feeling of “normality” is what we crave, when we finally have our projects, clients and tasks under control…. that moment where it can all be easy and simple.

Lying to ourselves

There are many people in these positions, like me, who have foolishly sacrificed our well-being, health and sometimes happiness in pursuit of getting everything organized and under control. We do all this because we tell ourselves, we can be healthy and happy later — when everything is “fixed”.

I am sure many can relate to statements like the following:

“Once I just get this project done, things will settle down and I’ll be able to focus on the bigger picture.”

“In a couple of months, when things settle down, then I will be able to have better work-life balance”

“After this busy period is over, I will get back on track with my personal development and self care”

The Hard Truth

It won’t settle down….sorry! Not if you are good at what you do.

If you do good work, it results in more business, more opportunities and more customers/clients — the result of good work is progress and advancement.

There is no great business and performer that is the finished article — there is always more or always better.

What to do?

Simply, it means a change of attitude and embracing this hard truth….

You need to embrace the lifestyle, embrace the chaos and importantly embrace the fact that you don’t want closure! Closure is not what you want for a developing business or career, evolving and improving is necessary.

Stop stressing to “finish” — your attitude should be that you are excited that there is more and more to do. That is a great thing and should be seen as evidence that you are doing great things!

Work hard, be passionate, stay organized, be efficient (see the article on Efficiency — LINK) — but don’t let the game (The Chase) stop you from being happy and healthy.
