FAQ on Technical Writing

DITA is an XML data model for authoring, producing, and delivering technical information. This data model consists of a set of design principles that help to create and manage content separately from formatting. LearningDITA.com provides e-learning for individuals who want to explore DITA, the Darwin Information Typing Architecture.

This site was set up by Scriptorium as a hub for DITA and content strategy training.

How do I sign up for a course?

  1. Create an account.
  2. Go the list of courses, and click on the course you want to take. On the next page that is displayed, click the Take this course button.

What tool should I use?

If you already have an XML editor on your computer, you can use it to complete the exercises. You can also download and install a trial version of an XML editor, or you can use a web-based XML editor.

How was the content developed?

The content here is pulled from the open-source DITA training project. Scriptorium started that development project to create a library of DITA learning content and contributed the initial content based on our existing classroom training materials.

The content is written in DITA using the DITA learning specialization. LearningDITA.com runs on WordPress; we created XSLT transforms to publish the content here.

What is the cost?

DITA (online self-study elearning) training course

This online training course teaches the basic skills in how to create content using the DITA XML technical writing standard. The ten learning modules in this course contain videos of the trainer with supporting slides and images. The course includes exercises and model answers for the delegates to complete and review.

How to Write Using DITA XML

The course ‘How to Write Using DITA XML” is designed for intermediate to advanced level technical writers who want to deep dive into the capabilities offered by DITA, create complex and personalized user guides and deliver this single-sourced output using Oxygen Author tool into various delivery channels. It will take you around 6 hours from the start of this course to go through this material. It comes with lots of various hands-on exercises, examples and advises based on Jordan Stanchev (the teacher of the course) practice.

What you’ll learn:

  • Learn to write using DITA XML.
  • Work with DITA maps and topics.
  • Produce documentation deliverables using Oxygen XML Author tool.
  • Reuse on maps level, topic level, topic element level, and table rows.
  • Personalized user guides based on the same DITA content using profiling of content.

Requirements:

  • You need a PC or a laptop where to install the needed software and follow the exercises in the course.
