What is Movieoke?

Movieoke is Movie Karaoke ā€” a fun new way to create 3D animated remakes of iconic moments from Movies, TV shows or Memes.

To make a video with Movieoke, just perform the lines on-screen and Movieokeā€™s performance capture system tracks your face + voice to apply it to a 3D character in real-time.

Drawing inspiration from Animoji, Vine and Snapchat, we set out to make creation in the medium of 3D Animation more accessible, improvisational and FUN than ever before.

Although anyone can use Movieoke to tell stories, this product is designed for the next generation of Video Creators. Specifically, teens now who are familiar with 3D creation in virtual worlds thanks to games such as Roblox/Minecraft, but are not quite ready to make the jump into a tool like Maya.

We believe that most 3D Animation content in the future will be created through performance, not keyframes. And the next generation of Video Creators will transform the medium of animation into a fast art from a slow art.

Ultimately, our ambition with Movieoke is to help creators channel their creative energy in completely new ways.

Movieokeā€™s History

Movieoke evolved out of Vortex, the performance-based 3D animation tool the Teleportal team built and released last Summer.

Vortex interface overview

As more creators used Vortex, it became clear that aspects of the productā€™s design would prevent it from making the medium of 3D Animation as accessible and relevant to video creators as we intended. The two core issues:

  1. Vortex did not address blank canvas syndrome and was too open-ended for many new 3D creators. In Movieoke, we solved this problem with the teleprompter that guides creators along. Going off-script is also highly encouraged!
  2. The learning curve of Vortex (although a fraction of a tool like Blender) was too steep to make 3D animation easy for anyone to create. It took new Vortex creators about five minutes to learn the interface. It needed to be ~30 seconds.

After identifying these issues, our designers (Cosmo and Edwon) went back to the drawing board and proposed Movie Karaoke.

Early product concept for Movieoke.

After putting a prototype together, we decided to shift Teleportalā€™s product focus Movieoke. Now, we believe weā€™ve arrived at a 3D Animation tool with almost no learning curveā€“ just look at your phone and use your face/voice to tell a story!

Movieokeā€™s Future

The first public release of Movieoke that is available now showcases the performance capture and video creation aspects of Movieoke. Creators step through shots in pre-made Movieoke Template Scenes built by our Tech Art team and add their performances to make a video.

Movieoke 2.0 (under active development) enables anyone to create Movieoke Template Scenes from within the app by picking characters, choosing backgrounds and creating shots.

Shot editing in Movieoke 2.0 (coming soon)

Beyond user-generated Template Scenes, future Movieoke releases will bring:

  • Ragdoll Physics Character Animation
  • Remixable Scene Templates
  • Collabs (think Words with Friends)
  • Character Creation Tools
  • Logic Editing (imagine teaching a character to flap its wings with a wink gesture)

Thatā€™s all for now! Happy Movieoke-ing and we look forward to seeing what you make. šŸ„³
