PYL Book Club (Nov 2022): Soul Shaping Tails: A Travel Memoir by Christy Nichols
Caution: after reading this book (or while you are reading it) you will be making travel plans to chase after your own adventures and have your own soul shaping tales.
Warning: set aside time to read because you won’t want to put it down.
I know Christy and I’ve heard some of the stories but not to the extent she shared them in the first of what I expect to be several travel memoir books. There are many tales not included in here that are just as interesting as the ones included.
Christy shared, in glorious detail, what started it all for her in terms of travel and adventure. The book is broken up logically with short, quick chapters that cover either a single trip or critical parts of another.
Christy takes the reader along for the ride in such a way that you can imagine being there with her but without enduring some of the painful and less glamorous parts.
I am definitely stepping up my adventure calendar because of Christy.
Personal Reflection Prompts:
— How has travel changed you, your opinions, or how you decided to live your life?
— Are you an adventurer? How do you define being an adventurer? If you aren’t an adventurer, do you want to be one?
— When did travel go seriously wrong for you? How did you handle it?
— Are you a spontaneous traveler or one who is well prepared? Can you be a spontaneous but well prepared traveler?
— Where do you want to go? What do you want to experience and see?
— Where are you afraid to go and why? Will you go anyway?
— Do you tend to go offtrail, creating your own path or do you tend to go to well traveled places?
— Have you benefitted from the kindness of strangers as you traveled? Have you helped a traveler in need?
— What is your favorite souvenir from a trip? What do you regret not acquiring on a trip and why didn’t you bring it home with you?
— What memorable people have you met on your travels?
— Where do you visit repeatedly and why?
— Where do you never want to go again?
— Have you traveled alone? How has the differed from traveling with other people?
— Where are you going next?
