Since the release of GPT-4o, the world of AI has become significantly more accessible. Not only has OpenAI released a powerful new model for all free users, but they’ve also given these same users the ability to use custom GPTs. Now millions of new users can explore the GPT marketplace and the incredible creations within.

  • What are custom GPTs?
  • Where can I find them?
  • Which should I use?

These questions and more will be answered in this article!

What are custom GPTs?

A “custom GPT” is a version of ChatGPT that has been reshaped to focus on a specific task or topic. While these versions of ChatGPT aren’t necessarily more powerful than standard GPT-4 Turbo (the Large Language Model that ChatGPT is built with), they have often been tailored to provide better results. In other words, think of a custom GPT as a modified version of ChatGPT that was refined to help tackle a specific issue. Want to create outlines for essays? Or save / chat with PDFs? Interested in playing a word or story telling game? These are just a few of the many ways Custom GPTs can be used.

All GPTs vary significantly in terms of their complexity and usefulness. Some will change the way that you work or complete tasks while others won’t perform differently than regular ChatGPT. It’s important to understand that most of the GPTs you see are created by the community. This means that there is no guarantee that the GPT will work as expected or provide meaningful responses. Because of this, there are two recommended approaches to finding useful GPTs. One is to use the most popular options that are highlighted in the marketplace. These tend to have the most active users and highest ratings. The other is to evaluate (or experiment with) a GPT you want to use. Ensuring that the GPT can return accurate or expected responses is crucial.

How do I access GPTs?

OpenAI has made it incredibly easy to find and use GPTs. Once you are signed in, simply select “Explore GPTs” from the bar on the left (as seen below).

This will take you to the GPT Marketplace. From here you can see the featured GPTs from this week and browse the different categories.

Once you find a GPT that interests you, clicking on the GPT will open the information page. This page provides a more detailed explanation of the tool. For example, you can see the number of conversations this GPT was used in, its category, rating, and even starter prompts.

What GPTs should I use?

That depends on what you are trying to accomplish! There are thousands of custom GPTs that each have their own unique use case. The Keymate.AI team has worked hard to create our Keymate.AI GPT. This tool can be used for a number of different tasks but focuses primarily on searching with Google (as opposed to the standard Bing browsing) and storing / recalling data. When combined, these two features enable users to search the web for specific information which they can then save within Keymate and interact with in future chat sessions. Saving information from the web is only a part of Keymate, users can also upload PDFs, Youtube videos, Google Docs, and both chat prompts and responses that they wish to store. Uniquely, users can interact with their Keymate Memory outside the ChatGPT interface. This means they can view, add, remove, and organize their saved items within the Keymate Memory Manager.

As the above image shows, all of a user’s saved items can be manually viewed through “My Library” or found through “Search”. By selecting “Actions”, users can quickly and simply chat with any stored information.

The Keymate GPT is just one of many great custom GPTs that can be found on the Marketplace. The best way to find tools that fit your needs is to explore and utilize the categories to help narrow your search. GPTs are a powerful tool that can help save time, increase the quality of work, and just have fun. OpenAI is ensuring their continued dominance in the AI ecosystem by bringing this marketplace to all free users.
