“Every day is a good day to be alive, whether the sun’s shining or not.” — Marty Robbins

How do you make sure every day has at least a little bit of joy and progress within?

The last month was a huge trip for me. I traveled through western Europe by train and graduated by the way. I was at some of the nicest spots in Europe and finished university after 5 years of studying.

You might think I have to be the happiest guy ever right at this moment because of that. But you are definitely wrong at this point. I am the happiest guy ever because of 5 simple things I cultivated in the last half of the year.

Although visiting the nicest spots on the continent and graduating aroused a good feeling inside of me, I didn’t feel fulfilled by that.

Traveling got me into thinking again and it showed traveling is not about seeing different places. Traveling is about the people you meet during your journey. So I registered what the most important things have been during all the days I felt great although I had to go to university every day and work for my graduation work, and although I wrote every day on Quora and Medium to build a small audience.

  1. Start your day smiling
  2. Breath deeply and be conscious of the arousing feelings
  3. Be grateful
  4. Help people whenever you can
  5. Hug your loved ones

Start your day smiling

“Beauty is power; a smile is its sword.” — John Ray

Start your day with a smile. A new day is a big reason to smile. You have the opportunity to step out and do whatever you want to do. Start with a smile and look forward to a day of happiness. A short smile can set you into a state of happiness without a special reason. You can be happy just because you are able to smile and to be happy. You literally choose your own happiness. There is no reason why I would not choose happiness if I have the opportunity to. Furthermore, you cultivate smiling and happiness throughout the day. I am a huge believer in cultivating the things we want to have during our day in the morning. So I start smiling.

Breath deeply and be conscious of the arousing feelings

“Being aware of your breath forces you into the present moment — the key to all inner transformation.” — Eckart Tolle

Breath deeply and be conscious of how you feel. Fuel your body. Feel your body. Are you all right? Are you healthy? Feel how you feel. And then head off to own your day and thus your life. Doing this directly in the morning cultivates self-awareness. It is so much about self-awareness. You start feeling what you really need instead of hearing what your mind tells you. Your mind doesn’t want your best. Your mind wants it comfortable and known. Being deeply aware of yourself is not part of the most people’s days so you have to push yourself at least the first time.

Be grateful

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” — Melody Beattie

Think about what you are grateful for every morning. Cultivating gratitude makes you happy from the first moment of your day. Be grateful for all the support you get every day. Be grateful for being healthy. Be grateful for living in a place which has access to the internet. Be grateful for daily food. Be grateful for a roof over your head. Be grateful for improving yourself. It will change your perspective.

Help people whenever you can

“Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.” — Les Brown

Then your day starts. You now know you are gifted. Now give something back. Our happiness lies in serving other people. The best moment in life is the moment of lightening up another person’s eyes through my service. You are worthy. Help where you can when you have the chance to. The benefits are countless.

Hug your loved ones

“A hug is like a boomerang — you get it back right away.” — Bil Keane

I hope you spend a significant amount of time with people you love. Hug them. They appreciate you like you appreciate them. A simple hug means a lot to them. So it does for you. You are full of love. Spread it and you will see love permeating through your life.
