Covid-19 and capacity

Jason Fried and DHH of Basecamp shared what it means to them to work from home during the pandemic. If you’re not averse to strong language, I highly recommend checking it out. One of the points they bring up is about how all of us are facing something new. With that, we need to lead our teams with grace.

Please try to remember that we will all deal with the stress, anxiety, and potential sickness in different ways. Jason and DHH talk about how some of us are at home, taking care of kids, with a full house. How can we expect everybody to be fully productive?

While we talk about improving performance and helping our teams thrive, it has little to do with short term gains in productivity. Instead, it’s about nurturing an environment where our teams can thrive — and take care of their lives. We can choose to deal with the reality of the situation and lead with kindness, empathy, and compassion — or we can cause more stress and anxiety through unrealistic expectations.

While anxiety is contagious, mindfulness is the antidote. Let’s be mindful of the challenges a pandemic puts on all of us — inside of work and out. Let’s be kind to one another — and ourselves — as we all struggle to navigate this enormous interruption.

Reach out and share how you’re holding up. There’s no reason to go this alone.
