Returning to Writing (Pt. 1)
Upcoming posts and recent writing projects.
2 July, 2018 // in The Coffeehouse Cleric // by Alex Rowe
As of today, I am returning to regular blogging after a few months away. I’m really excited to start writing again. Here are some upcoming tentative titles which I hope will whet your appetite:
- What I Learnt When I Gave Up Caffeine for 40 Days.
- Changing My Brother’s Nappy.
- How To Have a Good Conversation.
- Using Social Media Well In an Age of Distraction.
- Learning Spiritual Lessons From a Building Site.
- Working Efficiently: Simulating That “Last Minute” Feeling.
- Reading the Bible is Meant To Be Hard.
Before I start with new posts, however, I would like to share some pieces I have written elsewhere. This week, I share two posts written for the We Are Tearfund online magazine. This is an excellent site to explore questions of how Christians can live well in the world, with a focus on ethical lifestyles. Recent posts on their site discuss how to reduce food waste, the benefits of decluttering, and the recent Refugee Week. It’s been a pleasure to write with Tearfund, and I look forward to doing so more in the future.
How To Start A Blog
From Buzzfeed to Bloglovin’ — we all love reading blogs. Whether we occasionally dip in or whether we consume content at an alarming rate, blogs are useful platforms to share thoughts and ideas. But what if we want to start our own blog? In a society of information overload, how can we do this well? Alex, writer of The Coffeehouse Cleric, shares five ways to get started.
“Ideas are powerful in shaping societies. We only need to read the broadsheet headlines or watch the national news to see that this is plainly the case. And yet our world is one in which information is exchanged by increasingly sound-bite media. Even tweets apparently constitute diplomatic relations between nations. There is a need, perhaps now more than ever, for long-form pieces of writing — blogs, articles, and essays — which wrestle with the key issues of our day and the big questions of life. If you love to write and are interested in starting a blog, take a read of these five pointers for getting started.”
Why Pray When You’re Busy?
As Christians, we all find there are moments in our lives when prayer becomes less of a priority than the many other things we face day to day. Alex helps us all to think more about prayer and how transformational it can be, particularly when we’re busy.
“ When I wake up it startles me how quickly my mind can begin to rush. Lying in a silent room, my thoughts are noisy and frantic. I list the tasks, count the hours and visualise the day. I think of all the things that need to be done….
…When we wake up each day, these slow morning moments present us with an opportunity for prayer.”
