10 Hours in the Air — 10 Hours at the Gym
I’m back in the US for the first time in four years.
It’s been four years since I’ve seen my mother, my sisters, my old friends. Four years since I’ve been home. The changes I’ve missed, the loss, the death, and the life and new family have all hit me with the weight of a 10 hour flight.
I’m only back for a couple months, but I have a couple years to catch up on.
I want Mexican food.
My first meal request is a burrito, much to the surprise of my parents who were prepared to pay for a lavish meal right at the airport.
After the burrito and a few days adjusting my clock, I had to make sure everything was still going along for the podcast. Even though I hadn’t had much contact with either Nizar or Bashir, everything was more or less running smoothly.
I wonder if I should find some of my old friends.
Allen Porcenna, an old classmate that sat through physics with me was now a world class bodybuilder. He told me we could meet for lunch and said he’d be at the gym, like he is every day.
What followed was over an hour of amazing conversation about everything from how he found his long lost siblings who now live everywhere from Haiti to Canada, to how he deals with having to stretch the truth in order to be successful at his day job.
The strange person that I am, I came prepared to record. At the end of our conversation I had two amazing segments for Comatose and a longer interview from our talk.
After lunch he returned to the gym and I went home, eager to edit the audio and get the interview into something that works for the show. At the same time, I had to prepare for another trip to visit family that I haven’t seen in too many years.
