Business Development Tuesday — Going the ‘No Education’ Route in Business Start-up

How to qualify yourself with your talent, work ethic, and experience over a degree

Oh it’s not easy out there, I’ll tell you that. It certainly is not. With or without a degree you’re going to have to work your ass off to gain traction when sailing about on a new venture. Personally, I’m sailing in this boat without the degree. While others are learning what to do when the waves crash and the storms a brewin’, I’m headstrong in experiencing the good and the bad first hand. When those 2–8 additonal years of schooling for all of the others pass, I’ll be heading back to shore with hair on my chest, ready to take on my next client — ready for success. I’ve endured the storms and learned how to navigate the metaphorical waters. I’m ready.

If you’re someone not looking to put yourself in debt before you even get your feet wet (yes I’m continuing the metaphor, please, please, hold the rim shot!), and want to just jump right in you most certainly can. Winning is a science. Business development is a science. Success too is a science. It comes down to a few things.

Education. Without spending tens of thousands of dollars you can find a lot of 101 information about your niche almost anywhere. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, online, public libraries, and so many more places that‘ll cost you as little as $10. Of course you could spend hundreds of dollars on books to help you get started but it’s all based on your passion and your interest.

Execution. Just getting out there and doing it. Try the waters; face the failures; take what you’ve learned and get some results! Plain and simple. Put in the work. You just have to do it(Thanks, Nike!).

Consistency. That’s a word I preach often. It’s not enough to dedicate a single day, once a year, to learning. It’s not enough to write an article every once-when-you-feel-like-it. It’s not enough to just start and stop and start and stop and start again. Just keep going. Work out a daily or weekly schedule, dedicate the time, and execute on what you’ve learned consistently during the allotted time.

It’s really that simple. The waves and storms are things that everyone has to deal with. Deal with as much as you can, as early into your career as you can! Get the experience, learn how to deal with the not-so-simple complications, and win!

Feel free to share and recommend this article to someone who may be feeling inept, frustrated, not qualified to start a career in a field of which they have no formal education. Fuck that. Soak yourself in niche-related and business books and videos, outwork them, and win! If you have any questions, shoot them over to me on Twitter @ErickHoxter, I’d be more than happy to answer them!
