We’re The Dot and Line, a web publication producing community-driven journalism covering the art of animation. We publish essays, interviews, investigations, humor, lists, poetry, and more, covering everything from the earliest Bugs Bunny short to the latest Adult Swim show or Studio Ghibli film to trends and representation in the cartoon industry. We started this website in 2016 to fill a gap we saw in the journalism community. Most animation–focused publications are focused on writing for the animation trade, and most general interest sites rarely examine cartoons as art, and even more rarely engage with the community that creates and sustains it. We hope to change that. The Dot and Line publishes work by fans and for fans while remaining dedicated to taking seriously the role of criticism and reporting in covering any creative industry. We believe animation journalism should be as potent as the vibrant and varied form it covers — as exciting and enthralling as sitting down before a TV on a Saturday morning once was for cartoon lovers everywhere.
