The Aussie Entry Is Fantastic, But Will It Be Enough?
After a long tease and several moments of foreplay, we finally got to hear the song that Australia will be sending to Eurovision in 2016. Should Europe be worried? Yes and no.
Similar to Sergey’s review, I will be judging the song based on the studio edit/video clip that was released yesterday. I’m loving the track and it’s going to do well for Dami Im here in Australia if not around Europe, but I don’t think it’s a winning song due to lacking a big key change or drama within a very slow mid-tempo track.
Overall Rating: 4.5/5 silent train carriages
What does it sound like? A Sia power ballad. It’s really, really good but as I said, it’s missing drama that most mid-tempo Eurovision songs have. Good examples of this are:
- Sanna Nielson — Undo
- Marija Šerifović — Molitva
- Conchita Wurst — Rise Like a Phoenix
- Safura — Drip Drop
- Yohanna — Is It True
Dami Im has always been known for her vocal talent. You only have to look back at her X Factor days to realise that this girl can sing. But the song misses big moments that could of made it amazing. Perhaps she needed some crazy vocal highs and lows near the end of the song? Unsure.
Anywho, let’s save the criticism for the stage performance as I hope and secretly believe that she will add 10% more to the song with some vocal wizardry and an incredible set.
Stand out moment: The lyric “ Trying to feel your love through Facetime” — I wonder how much Apple asked for royalties? #LoveThroughFacetime
Fun fact: Supposedly Dami Im only knew that she was going to represent Australia in Eurovision around a month ago. So not only did she have to get a song, she had to create a video clip and belt it out like a champion. Good on her!
How will it go in Eurovision? top 5 for sure. Looks to be another good year for Australia, I just hope she will add that extra magic when she sings live in May.
