Email — it’s the bane of our working lives. They’re long. They’re impossible to understand!

And there are so many of them cluttering up our inboxes that we don’t know where to start.

These five steps will show you the essentials of how to write emails that people will actually read:

  1. Is this email really necessary?
  2. Say it in the subject line.
  3. Keep it short and simple.
  4. Explain attachments.
  5. Don’t play email ping-pong.

Let’s start by asking yourself whether you should even be writing an email.
