WOOHOO: our 100th TIS Weekly.
Celebrations at the office are in order!

“The coolest thing about iPod is that your whole music library fits in your pocket”. Steve Jobs said this in 2001 during the introduction of the iPod when portable cd-players were still top notch. He was a true visionary. So this week we’re not only going to look at the introduction talk of the iPod, but also at the humble beginnings of other companies in the music industry: Spotify and Shazam.

Introduction of the Apple iPod

“With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music players that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go. With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again.” — Steve Jobs

Side note: Did they really use Comic Sans MS for their presentation? Hehe.

The Spotify story

“Piracy was actually the superior product at the time.” Pär Jörgen Pärson, part of Spotify since 2008, explains how the company has grown through adversity since the launch in 2008.

Shazam — no immediate hit

“We had done the impossible. We had invented this amazing technology. So many people had told us that this technology couldn’t be done — and actually, that it didn’t exist. (…) And then we launched. All our projections said we’re going to have tens of millions of users, we’re going to have hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, as we expand around the world. But then, reality hit. It didn’t spread like wildfire. It was a brand new behavior. People didn’t use phones for anything else than voice calls, text messages and occasionally downloading ringtones…” — Chris Barton
