Inspired by this week’s Buma Music in Motion festival, and the AI & Music session with François Panchet in particular, let’s zoom in on Artificial Intelligence in Music. First a couple of examples, and if you scroll all the way down you’ll find a recap of the BMIM festival. And last but not least, the TIS Picks of Music month.

Psst, it’s our birthday next week. TIS will turn two :) We aim to have 2000 videos online by Friday. Will you help us? Go to tis.tv and upload your own innovation videos.

AI writes piano music

Artificial Intelligence is achieving something that’s previously thought of as an ability unique to humans: creativity, making art. Last year Google has published this 90-second piano track, part of Project Magenta, which uses deep learning and machine intelligence after being fed only four notes.

At BMIM we met François Pachet. He works at SONY CSL Lab and researches the possibility to compose music with AI. The lab has created FlowMachines, software which is able to recognize and transfer the music style of one song, to generate a new song. Listen to the two songs in this video inspired by The Beatles. The resemblance is uncanny.

AI writes Bach

This next video is also by Sony’s CSL Lab and shows how the DeepBach software has created a chorale in Bach’s style. The most challenging aspect of AI’s composing music is finding the balance between harmony and melody. Would you’ve been able to tell the difference between AI and the actual master Bach?

AI writes a musical

Sky Arts has used data compiled from the structure, scores and scripts of hundreds of musicals to generate scenario, melodies and many of the lyrics in this musical. Sadly no hit musical as the Guardian describes it as a ‘…middle-of-the-road show full of pleasant middle-of-the-road songs, along with a risibly stereotypical scenario and characters. It’s bland and a bit silly.’ Still, it’s a cool idea and hopefully we see another attempt in the near future.
