TIS Weekly (#117): Naturally!

The Innovation Station
3 min readSep 4, 2017

During the 16 months I’ve been working for The Innovation Station, I’ve come across a great number of videos that don’t really fit in with any of the existing themes. Luckily, we have the category ‘Unsorted’. Going through this theme, I realized that some of these videos could be bundled in a brand NEW theme: Nature! It will deal with innovations and initiatives that help to protect nature and (wild)life. We’re still debating whether the themed is named appropriately, so if you have better suggestions let us know!

Theme | NATURE
Rainforest Airforce

Tushevs Aerials designs, builds and flies drones to capture aerial footage. In 2014 they met up with indigenous leaders deep in the Amazon area to monitor the rainforest from above. Armed with drones communities can defend their territories against illegal activities. In this video you see some nice footage of Tushevs Aerials training locals how to fly with drones.

Theme | NATURE
A plan to feed the world

In 2050 the global population is expected to rise to 9 billion! One major concern is: ‘how can we continue to feed all the people?’ In this National Geographic talk researcher and Director of the Institute On The Environment, Jonathan Foley, discusses three major issues concerning this topic: feeding the world today + meeting future demands + protecting the planet. He continues by mentioning a few possible solutions, changes we have to make.

Theme | REFUGEES
Redesigning humanitarian aid

Give refugees money to buy things + opportunities to work & learn + social networks. A motivational TED talk by Ravi Gurumurthy, Chief Innovation Officer of the International Rescue Committee that starts with asking the refugee what he wants.

Thanks for sharing, Alex Bandea!
