Aamis — My first Assamese film is a disgusting experience.
Imagine the lengths people go to come up with new ideas!
When Film companion was praising this film by mentioning it as “The most haunting love story of the year” of 2019, I should have taken a cue from that. I went ahead because it was produced by Anurag Kashyap. Also I did not realize it was some semi-horror film as the description on Wikipedia reads. There is no horror here, but just horrible things.
I wanted to watch “Village Rockstars” that was sent in place of “Angamali Dairies” as official entry for the Oscars International Film category that year but this film got in the way and what an absolute waste of time though initially I hardly suspected what I was about to get.

This Assamese film takes human flesh eating to another level. A love-smitten young PhD scholar is slices a piece of his flesh and cooks it for his object of attraction, a married woman who is a doctor by profession. He tells her that only after she had finished eating the dish. Though repulsive to her after she comes to know of what that exotic dish was all about she did relish it while tkaing it. When initial images show the doctor going on a high I was wondering if she is going to be fascinated with her new acquaintance but turns out that in the process of consuming human flesh she longs for it. How more bizzare can it get? Demanding more human meat the guy supplies them extracting more flesh from his body and when he cannot supply to her demands he kills someone, a cycle-rickshaw owner. That’s when the duo are caught. Btw on one occassion she also supplies him a delicacy extracted from her flesh too which the guy finds repulsive.
Film companion calls this “a haunting love story”? Only when the flesh thing started I considered fast forwarding but you that have been warned don’t even need to do that. So give “Aamis” a miss as it surreptitiously says in its title. Stay away from this dreadful offering. You won’t “miss a” thing.
