The need for tamper-proof sources of randomness is a certainty for blockchain. Whether it is in order to encrypt sensitive data, run computer simulations such as the Monte Carlo method or even play games on-chain, random number generators (RNGs) form an essential component for all kinds of dApps. Centralized RNGs that introduce an element of trust into an otherwise trustless system are less than ideal, which amplifies the importance of decentralized randomness that doesn’t depend on any single entity.
