I often wonder as I walk by chain coffee shops, why do people drink bad coffee? There can be no excuse, not when there are now so many good coffee shops around.

A corollary to this, is why do people open coffee shops to serve bad coffee, when the chains are already doing such an excellent job?

Standart issue 8 had a somewhat perverse article extolling the virtues of bad coffee.

Jamie Oliver prides himself on good food, I doubt he would dream of serving up a bad dish, or use poor quality ingredients. Why therefore does he serve bad coffee at Jamie’s Coffee? Why is he insulting coffee lovers by giving away poor quality catering supply coffee?

Jamie’s Coffee at Gatwick, should it not greet arrivals, showcase the best coffee available? Source an espresso from Horsham Coffee Roaster, guest coffee from top coffee roasters from across the country.

And why not employ baristas? Would Jamie Oliver employ waiters as chefs?

And why disposable cups? Not going anywhere, not if catching plane as cannot take liquids through passport control.

Why not ceramic cups, sit and relax, showcase quality coffee?

Walk by a coffee shop and see a row of syrups on display, walk on by, it is like raising a flag to the world that bad coffee is served here.

When chocolate is dumped on a coffee, it is to hide the bad taste.

My first experience of coffee, was not drinking, was walking past coffee shops when they used to have a coffee roaster in the window, the smell of roasting coffee drifting down the street.

Recent studies showing coffee is good to drink, lead to healthier life style, the wrong conclusions have been drawn, these were observational studies, it is a common error to draw a conclusion of cause and effect, as that is not what the studies show. People with a propensity to certain lifestyles, may also have a propensity to drink coffee.

I was recently asked, where to buy coffee, coffee beans that is , not a cup of coffee.

As a general rule not a supermarket.

Waitrose make a slight concession to stocking quality coffee. Try Union. Only Waitrose do not do Union any favours when it is old coffee on the shelves.

Visit a speciality coffee shop, or order direct from a coffee roastery.

I recently had an undrinkable coffee, I left it after one sip. I then by chance had an encounter with the coffee roastery that supplied the coffee. A bizarre conversation followed, where they impressed me with their lack of knowledge.

It was therefore a relief the following day, to try an excellent Colombian coffee at FCB kiosk, then a few days later, an excellent espresso blend from Origin served at Artigiano.

I though have been spoilt of late. Walk around Athens, and you will encounter bad coffee. But there are a handful of coffee shops, that are the rare exception, will be served very high quality coffee.

Once had a good coffee, there is no going back.

Note: Wayne Delfino demonstrates appalling bad taste on coffee, lack of understanding of science, invites comments on article, then blocks others from reading the comments.
