News That Matters

Health

Every day, the opioid crisis gets worse…

Illinois ERs have had a 66% spike in opioid overdose visits. In PA, they have increased 81%. In just one year, nationwide ER overdose visits have gone up by 30%.

Opioids are being overprescribed and continue to flood our streets, yet they don’t even effectively do what they are prescribed to do: help treat pain.

A new study has found that opioids may not do any better of job treating pain than nonopioid medications — like Ibuprofen or Tylenol.

“Treatment with opioids was not superior to treatment with nonopioid medications for improving pain-related function over 12 months. Results do not support initiation of opioid therapy for moderate to severe chronic back pain or hip or knee osteoarthritis pain.” -The JAMA Network

Wealth

Magic Leap, a mixed-reality company, took another financial leap forward. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund just invested $461 million into the company, bringing their total VC investments to a staggering $2.3 billion. Now that they are swimming in cash, we can’t wait to see what awesome new tech they bring to the AR space.

Marketing Trends

Leaving your comfort zone is the number one way you can improve your life and business. In marketing, it’s easy to just stick with what you ‘know’ works, but being unwilling to try something new may prevent you from reaching much larger audiences.

“Brands concentrate on the 90 percent of the dashboard that represents their existing audience. They reach them as efficiently as possible to earn a like or share. What happens when you’re only talking to people who already like your 10 pictures of avocado toast? Brands can’t grow by keeping an audience the same size. To be clear, the goal isn’t to have the best dashboard. The goal is growth: growth of distribution, growth of customers, growth of sales.

Using social follower and look-alike data feels smart. It feels like the data is informing some action. Unfortunately, it’s the same action over and over again.”
