Health Australia Party

--

Another party with a relatively misleading name. When you look at their former name, the Natural Medicine Party, it becomes very clear why.

You see, the other name for ‘natural medicine’ is ‘alternative medicine’, or if you’ve watched Tim Minchin’s Storm before, ‘unproven bullshit’.

Given their support for natural therapies, the Australian Medical Association unsurprisingly has a pretty big problem with them. And for a party with the word health in the name, that’s dumpsterfire material to me.

Policy

So a key part of their platform is based on natural medicine and the surrounding pseudoscience. They want alternative medicine and ‘pharmaceutical’ (read: actual) medicine to be “on an equal footing”, which is genuinely terrifying and probably why the AMA wants this party gone.

They also oppose the fluoridation of water, saying that fluoride is a toxin (technically true, but you know what’s also a toxin in high enough doses? Water. Or any other substance), despite multitudes of evidence showing the benefits to dental health.

However, the party does claim to be pro-vaccination, which is true based off their policy. In saying that though, the argument they present against water fluoridation is the exact same as used by many anti-vaxxers. And given their support for a lot of other alternative crap, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have anti-vax candidates.

But in terms of their general policy (there isn’t much), it’s hard to get a read on which way they lean, so I’m going to mark them as a big old unknown. The only real standout is their very specific policy on bees, which I think Oprah could really get behind.

BEEEEEEEEEESSSS!

Vote for them if

You don’t actually care about health in Australia.
