Our fictional school is named in memory of William H.G. Butler, the first teacher in America to die in a high-profile school shooting. William Butler was shot in Louisville, Kentucky in 1853 by Matthews F. Ward, who was seeking revenge because Butler had used corporal punishment to discipline his 15 year old, younger brother.

Thanks to our Yearbook Club for their thoughtful tribute to the seven children we lost in the tragic event at our school on 3/15/18. The 🌼 represent the innocence of our students and the many more across the nation who have died in mass school shootings. Did you know? Your friends & family can now order our yearbook on Serengeti Prime. All proceeds will be used to purchase equipment & trainings to keep our school prepared, safe, and secure.

After the tragic February 14, 2018 shooting in Parkland, Florida, the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High created a commemorative yearbook that honored their fallen classmates. It was reported by CNN that the school was planning to sell this yearbook to the public as a “testament to [their] pain and perseverance.” These claims were allegedly misinterpreted, and the school’s yearbook committee clarified its intentions, but not without hearing grievance from the larger community, who felt uncomfortable at the thought of having pictures of their children sold to strangers.

This message written by Ethan’s favorite History teacher, Mr. Ortega, captures our sentiments about each and every student we lost on March 15th. Their kindness, intellect and bravery will never be forgotten. May they rest in peace.

School shootings are a harsh reality in America. Since 2009, American schools have experienced 57 times as many shootings as the other six G7 countries with the largest advanced economies in the world combined. In 2018 alone, there were at least 57 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in the U.S. and since the Columbine tragedy of 2009, 215,000 students have experienced gun violence in school.
