Always an issue, aren’t they?

EXPECTATIONS

She walked fast, close to a jog. Hair astray, gaze vacant. Focusing on infinity as if something was dragging her towards the horizon. Fast. The wind played with her hair, and the tears gushing out of her eyes flew away.

Clearly, she left in a rush.No worry about the traffic around, no care for anything in the world.
Just one step in front of another. It is as if this motion consumed her thoroughly.

She didn’t expect it.

The castle she had built in her mind had come crashing down. How? How could he be so blind?

She had loved him from the first time she saw him, years ago. He had joined her school, and they were 12. Since then, they were almost inseparable, along with their gang of friends. So many years ago. The spark fanned as they grew. Her love for him increased manifold.

He loved being around her. That was clear. They shared all their secrets together. He had moved on to college in another city. Yet the distance made it that much fonder.

He started work in another place. The weekend meets and treks, and trips continued. He wanted to be with her as much as she did as well.

It was clear.

This weekend was going to be special. She was all set to propose to him; this being a leap year and all! Everything was set. And he came home.

Before she could say anything, he rushed in and hugged her. He said there’s a surprise and then brought in another girl. He said she was the one. She. Bloody heck. Who was this girl, and why had he not mentioned anything about her before?

Civility demanded smiles and congratulations, which she offered. And then they left as soon as they came.

She didn’t know what to do. Just a desire to run. To run away from it all. Years of pining, loving, and dreaming about a life were just that — a dream.

She continued to walk. And walk.

**

Expectations. It is a surprise when there are none.

And the opposite when we build it all up, expecting something. When that “something” doesn’t happen, what happens?

When we build up a launch and promise something, we are setting expectations.

What will happen when these expectations are not met, fully or partially?
