The demand for digital marketing is increasing, but the digital skills gap remains. Last time we discussed one of the many digital marketing career opportunities: Social Media Manager. Follow along on our series as we dive into more career opportunities. Today, let’s focus on a break down of a Copywriter.

Copywriter

Copywriting is one of those careers that everyone has heard of, but not everyone understands. In the simplest terms, a Copywriter is someone who writes the text of advertisements or publicity material. They are a salesperson who makes their sales through text. However, not all Copywriters work in advertising.

Copywriting isn’t a new profession. Instead, it is an ever-evolving profession that has grown as technology has expanded. Copywriters have worked on magazine ads, postcard mailers, sales videos, emails, blog posts… the list goes on. There are many types of Copywriters, which adds to the variety of things a copywriter might work on.

Types of Copywriters

  • Marketing Copywriter
    - Uses various media, such as television, print, and radio, to urge consumers to purchase goods or services.
  • Brand Writer
    - Makes sure all copy (text) of a brand is clear, compelling, and matches the client/company’s brand or identity.
  • Social Media Copywriter
    - Writes and edits content for social media platforms, while reaching the target audience
  • SEO Copywriter
    - Creates original content, such as articles or blog posts, to both appeal to the consumer and to optimize search engine results
  • Senior Copywriter
    - Seeks out new trends, assists other copywriters in creating content, and provides clients with new ideas and copy to further develop a brand

Key Skills

While the types of Copywriter are varied, they all have a few common skills:

  • “Outside the Box” Thinking
  • Writing & Communication Skills
  • Awareness of Popular Culture and Trends
  • Collaborative Thinking
  • Time Management

With so many career options in the Copywriting field, it may seem a bit overwhelming to get started. However, with digital marketing and copywriting in your back pocket, you have a variety of opportunities awaiting you. If you’re always on top of trends, enjoy writing and thinking creatively, and have a drive for marketing, Copywriting could be the right career path for you.
